The Life I Promised Myself

The Cruising Godfather · Declassified File CG-010

The Elixir · Asymmetrical ThinkingThis Is Your Brain on Travel

Ten cruises did more than move me through ports. They rewired the way I priced risk, attention, time, identity, and possibility. This is not a bucket list. It is the evidence locker for an asymmetrical life.

10 Evidence Files Eight Circumnavigations Psychological Distance Capped Downside Uncapped Upside

The Real Story

The original version looked like ten destinations: Venice, Dubai, the Panama Canal, Alaska, Santorini, the Maldives, Bora Bora, Norway, New Zealand, and Oasis of the Seas. Beautiful places. Memorable photographs. A convincing trip report.

But the ports were never the point. They were field laboratories. Each one interrupted the inherited script, changed the scale of the possible, and supplied evidence that a straight-line life was not the only responsible life available.

Across forty-eight countries and eight circumnavigations, the finished route looked designed from the outside. It was not. It began with orientation: a life measured in horizons instead of possessions. The map came later.

A symmetrical life protects the downside. An asymmetrical life protects the soul.
01

Ordinary World · The Inherited Script

Save the world for later.

Predictable progress, approved ambition, acceptable risk: the life shaped like a staircase and timed like a mortgage schedule.

The Script

Route first. Destination someday.

Work until freedom becomes affordable, then rent the horizon after the best years have already compounded elsewhere.

The Blind Spot

Comfort disguises concentration risk.

A single employer, address, identity, and approved story can feel safe while making the entire life fragile.

The Warning

Time can go bankrupt quietly.

On a 110-day world cruise, some passengers were seeing the horizon for the first time at seventy-five, on rented time.

02

The Call · The Sea's Offer

Surrender predictability. Receive the world.

The compensation was not merely money. It was access: another country outside the window, another identity available by breakfast.

The need to break free and sail away was ancient, enduring, and incessant. Leaving one place created psychological distance from the assumptions that governed it. The farther the ship moved from the Ordinary World, the easier it became to inspect that world rather than merely obey it.

The sea did not make risk disappear. It changed the arithmetic. A contract had a defined duration. A cabin supplied the address. Meals and movement were built into the platform. The downside could be contained. The upside—skills, countries, relationships, stories, reinvention—could not be priced in advance.

The Asymmetric Equation

Capped Downside + Uncapped Upside + Repeated Exposure = Asymmetric Return Protect the survival floor. Then place yourself where one voyage, one person, one idea, or one unexpected invitation can alter the rest of the map.
03

Answer the Call · From State It to Create It

The destination appeared before the route.

Before the path could be taken physically, it had to become permitted psychologically.

Before you change a life, you change the story you believe you are allowed to live. Wanting is cheap. Permission is scarce. The destination must appear before the route, because the route cannot organize itself around a heading that has never been declared.

“Just Do It” became “Just Done It.” Practice, practice, practice. Not blind optimism: repeated action that made surprise statistically more likely. The experiences at sea turned can’t into cans and converted bad planning into serendipity, allies, synchronicity, and the appearance of hidden hands.

Open Field Exercise · The Two Scripts

Draw two columns on one page.

Left: The Script I Was Handed.

Right: The Story I Would Choose.

Write ten lines in each. Circle the three places where the gap between the columns is most painful. Those circles are not complaints. They are your table of contents.

04

Foreign Land · Ten Evidence Files

The ports were laboratories.

Each destination changed a variable in the operating system: scale, attention, constraint, imagination, time, or the definition of a platform.

Venice waterways and architecture

Evidence File 01

Venice

Gondola Dreams and Acqua Alta

Ancient neural pathways meet modern consciousness in a city where the street itself refuses to stay solid.

Operational Meaning Adaptation is not a detour. In Venice, instability is the infrastructure.
Dubai skyline and modern architecture

Evidence File 02

Dubai

Strange but Awesome

A city built from declared intent, where the improbable becomes ordinary through repetition, capital, and engineered belief.

Operational Meaning The destination must appear before the route. Dubai is Commander’s Intent made visible.
Panama Canal seen from a ship

Evidence File 03

The Panama Canal

Two Oceans, One Decision System

Locks, constraints, sequencing, and patience turn geography into flow.

Operational Meaning A constraint can become leverage when the system is designed around it.
Ed Reif at Glacier Bay in Alaska

Evidence File 04

Alaska

The Great Land

Scale interrupts self-importance. Ice, distance, and silence restore the correct proportions.

Operational Meaning Awe is not decoration. It is a recalibration instrument.
Santorini Greece above the Aegean Sea

Evidence File 05

Santorini

Civilization Above the Blue

White walls, volcanic edges, and deep time make the present feel both temporary and complete.

Operational Meaning Beauty becomes strategic when it changes what you believe a life may contain.
Maldives island and turquoise water

Evidence File 06

The Maldives

Consciousness Is Wireless

When terrestrial noise falls away, attention stops behaving like a scarce resource.

Operational Meaning Less signal can produce more awareness.
Bora Bora lagoon and volcanic peaks

Evidence File 07

Bora Bora

Stopover in Paradise

Volcanic peaks and impossible lagoons turn possibility from an abstraction into a visible landscape.

Operational Meaning The upside of movement is not escape. It is expanded imagination.
Geirangerfjord in Norway

Evidence File 08

The Fjords of Norway

Mother Nature and Father Time

Geological time meets the human clock and exposes how hurried the Ordinary World has become.

Operational Meaning Distance and silence separate signal from inherited noise.
Milford Sound in New Zealand

Evidence File 09

The Fjords of New Zealand

Milford Sound

The eighth wonder does not ask to be understood. It asks the nervous system to become available.

Operational Meaning Wonder is a capability: the practiced refusal to become unimpressed.
Ed Reif in the Bahamas during an Oasis of the Seas voyage

Evidence File 10

Oasis of the Seas

The Ship Is the Destination

A 225,282-ton city at sea reverses the old model: the platform becomes the experience.

Operational Meaning A game changer does not improve the category. It changes what the category is for.
05

Trials · When Novelty Becomes Another Routine

Even wonder can become wallpaper.

The asymmetrical life is not a permanent holiday. Repetition can turn extraordinary surroundings into another form of unconsciousness.

Trial 01

Confusing movement with transformation

A changed location does not guarantee a changed mind. The nervous system can carry the old room onto every ship.

Trial 02

Worshipping outcomes

A spectacular port can reward a shallow decision. A difficult crossing can follow a deeply aligned one.

Trial 03

Using novelty as anesthesia

The point is not to flee boredom forever. It is to build enough attention that ordinary life becomes visible again.

The asymmetric life is not random and it is not reckless. Real downside exists. You protect what can ruin you, then expose yourself to what can transform you. The discipline is not permanent motion. It is knowing when movement is signal and when movement has become avoidance.

The Cruising Godfather · Declassified

I worked on ships. I was collecting worlds.

The official explanation was logistical. The unofficial explanation required an archive.

07

Ship's Library · The Intellectual Cargo

Three ideas beneath the itinerary.

The ships supplied movement. The library supplied interpretation.

Joseph Campbell

Follow the track that appears after commitment.

Hidden hands are less useful as magic than as a description of what commitment teaches the senses to notice.

Karen Blixen

Salt water as cure

Sweat, tears, and the sea: effort, grief, and distance as three forms of cleansing attention.

Joseph Campbell's Map

The journey confirms where you have been.

A true map does not choose the destination. It reveals that the apparently crooked route had a structure.

08

The Elixir · Living an Asymmetrical Life

The brain was not rewired by travel alone.

It was rewired by repeatedly choosing aliveness over predictability while keeping the downside survivable.

Book Connection · Living an Asymmetrical Life

No fixed address. No straight line. No ordinary map.

The sea years became the first proof that a human life needs curvature. The war years, poker years, pandemic years, and publishing years would test the same equation in different weather: cap what can destroy you, then remain available to what can transform you.

Final Transmission

The ports changed. The operating belief remained.

Travel did not make the life meaningful because the places were beautiful. It made the life meaningful because each crossing created enough distance to question the inherited script—and enough evidence to write a different one. The real souvenir was not the photograph. It was a decision system capable of imagining another future and moving before the whole route appeared.
