Harvard taught one kind of authority. Boston taught another. Alaska taught a third. The deeper question was never which school had the strongest brand, but which education changed what I could actually see, decide, and do.
Veritas
The old line was deliberately provocative: Harvard Business School is the West Point of capitalism; the rest is karaoke, cheap imitation. Beneath the joke was a serious obsession with authority. Who gets to certify knowledge? Who gets to decide that one education is real and another is counterfeit?
The answer became less obvious the farther I travelled. Harvard had Veritas. Bangkok had Khao San University. Alaska had glaciers. Ships had weather, deadlines, passengers, consequence, and no interest in the pedigree printed on the diploma.
You shall know the truth, but first it may annoy you.

The diploma became a proxy for capability.
The argument in the original field note was intentionally exaggerated: an older generation bought degrees before tuition and debt transformed the economics.

Bangkok supplied the absurd counterexample: a fake degree cheap enough to expose how much faith we place in the paper itself.

Give them money, spell your name, receive the diploma. The joke works because everyone already understands that the paper and the learning are not the same thing.
The Bangkok joke did not prove that universities are worthless. It did something more useful: it separated the credential from the capability long enough to inspect both.
Prestige can be real. Networks can be real. Intellectual formation can be real. So can debt, signalling, gatekeeping, imitation, and the temptation to confuse institutional reputation with personal competence.

More Than a Feeling
The city is an argument between inheritance and reinvention: revolutionary history, elite institutions, working harbour, and modern ambition.
Harvard became the symbol because symbols compress complexity. But Boston offered a wider lesson: institutions matter, history matters, and so does the ability to walk outside the institution and test the story against the city that surrounds it.

Trying to isolate one feature of Alaska only made its connections more visible. The wilderness taught systems thinking without a lecture hall.
None of these landscapes felt ugly because they were natural and wild. Geography became geology in motion: earthquakes, hurricanes, glaciers, rivers, ice, and weather changing the syllabus every day.
The cruise ship was still a mediated form of wilderness—karaoke travel, by the old joke—but even an imitation can sharpen the ear enough to hear the real music.
