I was not volunTOLD. I volunteered to help with the roundup and loading — a pleasure to assist with the precious cargo, now ready for market and sale.
That is one of the quiet corrections Fair Isle makes to the visitor’s eye. At first you see landscape: green fields, sheep, sea, weather. Then you stay long enough to see the system underneath it. The island works because people participate.
Here, the old routines are not museum pieces. They are how things get done. Work is social, practical, seasonal and visible.

From spectator to participant
The sheep roundup is where the romantic idea of island life gives way to the practical reality of island life.
The pleasure was not in standing back with a camera. It was in being useful: helping gather, load and move the flock toward the next stage of the island’s working year.
Fair Isle compresses the distance between consumption and contribution. You can see the hands, tools, animals, vehicles, weather and judgment that make ordinary life possible.

Then The Regular Day Begins
The work behind the view
On a remote island, the spectacular and the ordinary occupy the same day.
Then the regular day begins. That sentence is almost the entire Fair Isle lesson: what looks exceptional from outside becomes routine from inside. Weather, animals, maintenance, transport and neighbourly help do not arrive as separate experiences. They are simply the day.
