Singapore-Happy Daze

World Cruise 2018 · Singapore

Happy Daze

Seven years after the first flirtation, Singapore returned as light, height, water and the illusion that an edge could continue forever.

Travelling by cruise ship—twelve ports in fourteen days—is like flirting with life. It is saying, I want to love you, but I have to go. This is simply the way it is.

The first Singapore

Before the skyline became familiar, it was a first port, a first impression and a photograph that carried its own farewell.

A city at the crossroads

Singapore was the beginning of the Singapore-to-Mumbai passage: a bright, disciplined island at the meeting point of cultures, ships and onward routes.

The world cruise kept moving—Kuala Lumpur, the Strait of Malacca, Phuket, Yangon, Colombo, Cochin and Mumbai. Singapore was not a destination to possess. It was a threshold.

From zero to infinity

The second visit climbed higher. The city was no longer only streets and harbor. It became a horizon viewed from the edge of water.

The Rolls-Royce of zero-edge pools

Often copied, the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool turned the skyline into part of the water. It was an optical trick on an architectural scale: the city appeared to begin where the pool ended.

Visually stunning. Perfectly placed. A reminder that Singapore does not merely build upward. It stages the view.

Every edge remembers another edge

Singapore joined a personal atlas of pools that appeared to spill into oceans, islands and sky. Each was a different version of the same beautiful deception.

Final Reflection

The city changed. So did the traveller.

In 2011, Singapore was a goodbye disguised as a greeting: H.A.N.D.—Have A Nice Day. In 2018, it became Happy Daze: the same island seen from higher ground, where the water ended but the journey did not.
