Qatar Builds in Contrasts
In 2017, Qatar kept changing scale. One weekend: horses clearing fences under arena lights. Another: fighter simulators and National Day flyovers. Then a library where instruments could be checked out, a hotel designed like a lucid dream, a warehouse of classic cars, and a desert where the road disappeared beneath the wheels.
The connecting idea was not luxury alone. It was orchestration—the ability to move people, animals, machines, knowledge, ceremony, and design through the same small country without making any of it feel small.

Flying Horses
The Longines Global Champions Tour brought five-star show jumping to Doha—and a reminder that even horses arrive by air freight.
The Longines Global Champions Tour is the world’s premier five-star show-jumping event, hosted by Qatar. The horses made the arena look weightless. The logistics behind them were anything but.
I love the fact that you can FedEx a horse. Doha turns international sport into a precision movement of riders, animals, aircraft, ground crews, and spectacle.
From Simulator to Live Action
Darb Al Saai made national capability visible: classroom instruction, simulation, and the promise of live follow-on training.
The celebration leading up to Qatar National Day on December 18 began at Darb Al Saai. Here was a complimentary ticket to the machinery behind readiness: classroom and simulator training connected to Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopter and the F-16QA Fighting Falcon.
The benign environment comes first. Then the live-action follow-on training in the United States. The simulator is not the mission, but it is where judgment can be rehearsed before consequence arrives.
The National Day Airspace
Along the Corniche, national identity arrived by formation: helicopters, fighter aircraft, heritage vehicles, and a city watching upward.
The largest national march in Qatar’s history filled the Corniche with ceremony, machinery, and air power. Apache helicopters passed the grandstand. Fighter aircraft followed. The scale was military, but the audience was civic.
The parade joined heritage and modern capability in one public sequence—tradition on the ground, precision overhead, and the whole city serving as the grandstand.
Doha Does Rich
The Mondrian Doha brought old Hollywood, Alice in Wonderland, pop art, and 24-karat excess into the same vertical fever dream.
Doha’s most theatrical hotel takes the wow factor to another level. Old Hollywood chic and the Mad Hatter meet for a reunion of competing energies.
Pop-art murals. Grand chandeliers. A 24-karat gold elevator. A three-story floating spiral staircase. A psychedelic rooftop pool. Three-hundred-and-sixty-degree views of the Qatari capital. These are freeze frames; the full effect is somatic.
Once again, Qatar: you are the best in the world at doing rich.
A Library Built for More Than Books
Qatar National Library opened as a civic operating system: books, multimedia, instruments, fabrication, and public space under one enormous roof.
Qatar opened its first national library after five years of design and construction. The scale is architectural, but the ambition is social.
Three-dimensional printers. Books. Multimedia. Musical instruments available for checkout. This is not a warehouse of finished knowledge. It is a place designed to help people make the next thing.
Machines That Remember
At the Al Thani collection, automotive history arrived as chrome, fins, utility, nostalgia, and exhaust.
Vintage, nostalgic, and exhausting: a collection of classic cars at the Al Thani museum. The machines preserve an industrial memory that is both global and personal.
Desotos from the 1940s. Rare Ford Model Ts. Dodge utility vehicles. The joke about having any color as long as it is black survives because the silhouette still does.
The Duneeverse
Beyond Doha, the surface moves beneath the vehicle. The desert is not a road. It is a decision field.
Dune bashing means driving at fast and slow speeds over shifting sand. It takes skill, timing, and a four-wheel-drive truck to read the terrain.
There must be one great car salesman in Qatar because nearly every SUV seems to be a Toyota Land Cruiser. The dunes run to the sea. Camels hold the horizon. The job remains confidential enough that even I do not know what I am doing here.
The Long Game in Plain Sight
The arena, the simulator, the parade route, the library, the hotel, the museum, and the dunes all taught the same lesson: capability is cultural before it becomes technical.
Qatar’s 2017 story was not one event. It was a sequence of environments built to make ambition visible.
