An Eye For An Island-Living Well Is The Best Revenge

Magical Thinking at Sea · A Photographic Field Note

Living Well Is the Best Revenge

The voyage was never only about new landscapes. It was about developing new eyes: using photographs, imagination, and years at sea to rehearse a life—and then discovering that the rehearsal had become real.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

The camera captured where I had been. Imagination kept showing me where I might go next.

Ordinary World · The Camera

Everyone has a photographic memory. Not everyone has film.

Digital photography turned fleeting moments into a visual record of a life in motion.

Thanks to digital photography—and my trusted camera—the old limitation disappeared. Point, shoot, and capture the moment.

I am an extremely talkative person. Yet I like taking pictures because they speak for themselves. A photograph does not explain the voyage. It preserves the evidence that the voyage happened.

Over time, those images became more than souvenirs. They became a second memory: a way to return to a place, recover a feeling, and notice what I had missed while I was busy living it.

Field Note 01

The camera as witness

Words interpret the experience. Photographs hold the scene still long enough for the experience to interpret you.

The Call · Imagination

Thinking is the preview of life’s coming attractions.

The mind leaves the body’s present coordinates and begins exploring possibility.

My definition of thinking is when the mind separates from the body. Some call it dreaming. I call it using the imagination.

In imagination, you can leap long distances, move forward and backward in time, walk through solid brick walls, and never age. The physical world keeps its rules. The mind rehearses alternatives.

The Preview Equation Attention + Imagination + Repetition = A Future You Can Recognize Not a guarantee that every thought becomes reality—a practice of becoming able to see and enter possibilities when they appear.

Notice

See what is already here.

The new eyes come before the new landscape.

Imagine

Manufacture the experience first.

The mind creates a rehearsal space where new choices become thinkable.

Move

Enter the scene.

Imagination matters most when it changes the direction of the next step.

Foreign Land · MTness

Magical Thinking at Sea

Wish fulfillment, the law of attraction, and the attempt to make imagined experience vivid enough to guide a real life.

Four years of magical thinking at sea
MTness: magical thinking at sea, preserved in photographs.

My definition of magical thinking—MT—is the ability to manufacture experiences in the mind and later recognize, attract, or create situations that resemble them in life.

The mind is what the brain does. Put simply, what we consistently think about shapes what we notice, what we prepare for, and what we are willing to pursue.

I return to the importance of being Ernest—Hemingway—and the idea that, at our best, we make it all up so truly that later it can happen that way.

The Return · The Living Archive

Four voyages. Thousands of moments. One expanding memory.

The original Flash slideshows no longer belong to the modern web. Their source albums remain as doors into the photographic record.

Legacy note: the original Picasa Flash slideshow embeds were removed because modern browsers no longer support Flash. The four original album destinations are preserved above.

The Elixir

Living well is not the reward after the voyage. It is the voyage.

The best revenge is not proving anyone wrong. It is developing new eyes, choosing the life you kept imagining, and becoming present enough to recognize it when it arrives.
