LAX-Los Angry Cars- to AUK New Zealand

From Los Angry Cars to AucklandFlight Risk

The world cruise was over. London, the Midwest, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, the 405, the international date line, a Chilean ash cloud, and a cancelled Qantas flight stood between me and the Land of the Long White Cloud.

“If God had really intended men to fly, he would have made it easier to get to the airport.”

Planes are like diets. I do not like being on them—especially when the route includes Los Angeles traffic, the international date line, and a horizon already rearranged by the sea.

01

Ordinary World · Re-entry

The world cruise ended. Normal geography returned.

London, the Midwest, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles—and twenty extra pounds of proof that the voyage had been generous.

After the world cruise, I had put on an extra twenty pounds. Back from London. Over to the Midwest. Then Fort Lauderdale. Now Los Angry Cars—Los Angeles—and the 405, headed toward another airport.

Re-entry was not a return to stillness. It was a transfer. The ship had stopped moving, but the itinerary had not. Land simply inserted traffic, terminals, and boarding groups between one horizon and the next.

The Call · The Long White Cloud

Auckland waited beyond the date line.

New Zealand promised another hemisphere, another clock, and another chance to wake inside the itinerary.

I was headed to Auckland and New Zealand—the Land of the Long White Cloud. Except the cloud was not entirely metaphorical. The recent eruption in Chile had pushed volcanic ash into the aviation map.

The destination remained clean and cinematic. The route became operational: weather, ash, aircraft, cancellations, and the Tasman Sea deciding which parts of the plan still belonged to me.

Answer the Call · The 405

Before crossing the Pacific, survive Los Angeles.

Every global itinerary contains one local obstacle with delusions of grandeur.

Friction 01

The freeway

The 405 turns airport access into the first leg of an international expedition.

Friction 02

The airport

Security, luggage, gates, and waiting convert movement into procedure.

Friction 03

The date line

The calendar shifts beneath the aircraft before the traveler has caught up.

The Flight-Risk EquationDistance + Friction + Uncertainty = A Story Worth KeepingSeamless travel produces arrivals. Interrupted travel produces memory.
04

Foreign Land · Thirty-Two Days

The Tahitian adventure lost three days before it began.

Qantas cancelled the flight, and the choppy Tasman Sea removed part of the voyage from the calendar.

Thirty-Two Days, Minus ThreeThe Tasman Sea kept the days the airline could not deliver.

The itinerary promised a thirty-two-day Tahitian adventure. Then Qantas cancelled my flight. Three days disappeared, along with the choppy Tasman Sea I would now miss.

Travel plans like to pretend they are contracts. They are closer to opening bids. Weather, machinery, oceans, and timing reserve the right to renegotiate.

The traveler can count the missing days—or recognize that the cancellation has already created the chapter the perfect itinerary never would have supplied.

05

Trials · Ash, Weight, and Waiting

The body, the aircraft, and the atmosphere all filed objections.

Twenty pounds, volcanic ash, cancelled flights, traffic, and the ordinary resistance of getting somewhere extraordinary.

The post-world-cruise body had its own baggage allowance. The atmosphere had ash. The airline had a cancellation. Los Angeles had the 405. Every layer of the journey introduced another authority with veto power.

Yet none of it cancelled the underlying movement. The itinerary bent. The traveler adapted. Auckland remained on the other side of the friction.

Open Field Notes · Planes Are Like Diets

I do not like being on planes, especially when crossing the international date line. Ships provide continuity: one bed, one address, one horizon changing gradually. Aircraft compress the transformation into a sealed tube and a missing calendar day.

The joke hides a preference. I did not dislike travel. I disliked the machinery that made the destination arrive all at once.

Just when I thought I was out, another crossing appeared.

The sea had made the first offer. The Pacific filed the next assignment.

Companion Stories

The larger operation.

The airport transfer belongs to a twenty-year archive of moving horizons, time wealth, and enduring partnership.

The Elixir

The itinerary is what remains after the plan stops cooperating.

Auckland was the destination. The 405, the date line, the ash cloud, the cancelled flight, and the missing Tasman days were the actual voyage. Perfect travel gets you there. Interrupted travel tells you who arrived.
